Puzzle (Answer below)
The Spy was being chased by enemies with rifles and tracking dogs running through the forest on the mountainside. In the distance the Spy could see a dark river that was wide enough to cross with a depth he knew of just over his head and with a wheat field on the other side. The Spy had some choices: Keep running. Hide behind a tree. Dive into the river. Or cross the river to the other side.

Answer
If the spy kept running the dogs could track where we went by his scent and if he hid behind a tree he would likely be found. If he crossed the river, when he would slow down to get out on the otherside or in the wheat field where he would be a target for a rifle shot. However, if he dove into the river he could swim with the current and the dogs would lose his scent, and if the enemies tried to shoot him he could dive deep to evade bullets that lose their energy on average beyond three feet of water.
