Smartphones Can Keep Us Smart!
So while the chant of many a parent and partner is for their children and significant others to get off their devices and spend more “quality” time in social interaction, of interest is a study that suggests the opposite for the middle-aged and elderly. Findings of the “Effects of Digital Device Ownership on Cognitive Decline in a Middle-Aged and Elderly Population: Longitudinal Observational Study” published in 2019 found that digital devices served as useful and important platforms for cognitively stimulating activities to delay decline in cognitive functions.
Differing Devices, Different Effects
The study appears robust in the review of 13,457 adults aged 45 years and older in 2011-2012, that were followed for four years with two year followup visits. Comparisons were with those that had no desktop or cellphone, those with either a desktop or cellphone device, and those with both devices. The findings included that individuals with desktop and cellphone ownership had decreased cognitive decline in comparison with those without a desktop or cellphone. Having just a cellphone fell in between. Notably differing effects related to the type of digital device were discussed in terms of devices affecting different functions and areas of cognition. For instance, desktop compute were utilized for search functions, while cellphones were more of a social channel to maintain contact with friends, engagement in entertainment, and for social participation and interaction.
The discussion referenced increasing digital connections and device ownership, that enabled easier access to “experiential, intelligential, social or emotional support for health purposes“. Further, the cognitively stimulating actives permitted by digital devices was discussed as generating a cognitive reserve of sorts, as a buffer against development of cognitive impairment.
