The Stanley Cup is considered to be the oldest trophy awarded in North America. The cup was commissioned by Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley, Lord Stanley of Preston in 1883 and paid 10 Guineas for it, which was about $50 at that time. The cup was awarded to the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association for the first time in 1893. In 1910 the National Hockey Association which eventually became the National Hockey League became the keepers of the Stanley cup. Since 1926 only National Hockey League teams are able to compete for the Stanley Cup.
